Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Early Years Foundation Stage
(EYFS)
At Langley Green Primary School, we have four classes in our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):
Nursery – England Class (morning session 8:30am – 11:30am)
Scotland Class (afternoon session 12:30pm – 3:30pm)
Reception – Northern Ireland Class
Wales Class
Our intention is that our curriculum in the EYFS extends opportunity, raises aspiration, open’s children’s eyes to the world beyond their immediate environment, enables our children to live happy, healthy and productive lives and inspires children to learn more. Our intention is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is ambitious for all our pupils.
Our curriculum is inclusive and pupils with special needs are well supported in school with extra resources or support deployed as necessary.
At Langley Green Primary School, we follow the EYFS Framework and strive to provide memorable experiences to enrich the curriculum.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum underpins all future learning by aiming to support, foster, promote and develop children through the following seven areas:
Prime Areas:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional development
- Physical development
Development in the Prime Areas enables the children to go on and master the skills within the Specific Areas.
Specific Areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Our curriculum focuses on the development of children’s knowledge and skills across all strands of learning in Development Matters with the aim of ensuring pupils are ready for the next stage of their learning.

When planning and guiding pupil activities, we also reflect on the different ways that our pupils learn and ensure that the characteristics of effective teaching and learning are embedded into our daily practice.
The Three Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning are:
We value the contribution that our parents and carers make to their child’s learning and take every opportunity to work in collaboration with them.
We are a reflective school and continually strive to improve our teaching and learning in light of the latest research and outstanding practice seen in schools in both the United Kingdom and worldwide.
Assessment in EYFS
As part of our daily practice, we observe and assess children’s development and learning to inform our plans. These observations are made across all the areas of learning in EYFS.
Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)
Your child in Reception will be participating in the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) within the first 6 weeks of starting Reception. The purpose of the assessment is to provide the starting point for a new measure that will help parents understand how well schools support their pupils to progress between reception and year 6.
Please click here to read an information for parent’s booklet about the RBA.
Early Learning Goals (ELGs)
The level of development that children should be expected to have attained by the end of the EYFS is defined by the Early Learning Goals (ELGs).
Please click here to see all 17 Early Learning Goals.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP)
In the final term of the year in which the child reaches age five, and no later than 30 June in that term, the EYFS Profile is completed for each child.
Each child’s level of development is assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals. To reach a Good Level of Development (GLD), pupils must achieve at least expected levels in the Prime Areas and in literacy and mathematics by the end of the Reception year.
We will provide a written report for parents that summarises the results of their child’s EYFS profile.
Spring 1 - Nursery - Once upon a time... - The Gingerbread Man
Spring 1 - Reception - We Have Lift-Off! - Whatever Next!
We enjoyed learning the story, 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.'
We looked for signs of autumn and created some autumn artwork.
In our story, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, the bear lived in a cave. We talked about where we live and made different types of homes.
We carefully plan our environment to cover all areas of the curriculum and to reflect the needs and next steps of the children. There is a balance of play and structured learning activities. We have a large interactive outside area that is used by all the EYFS classes.
Talk4Writing Core Texts in the EYFS
Having engaging and challenging core texts is one of the ways we encourage our pupils to develop a love of literature and to read for enjoyment. Here are the core texts we will be reading in the EYFS.

Mathematics
Maths No Problem
In Reception, we follow a maths mastery approach where the children are encouraged to develop fluency and reasoning through a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach (CPA). We use the vehicle of Maths No Problem for a daily session in Reception.
Mathematics Planning Overview
5 and 15 Minute Maths
This is a daily session taught in Nursery and Reception to embed mathematical concepts and to be able to relate them to everyday life. 5 and 15 minute maths includes activities that reinforce normal classroom maths teaching. It also introduces some skills informally, so providing children with prior knowledge for when it is formally taught to them. It teaches key concepts such as number, measurement, time, money, mental arithmetic, estimation, geometry, patterns and data handling. Intregal to the teaching of this session, is co-operative learning which extends and develops across the whole school.
Winning with Numbers
This is a daily session taught in both Nursery and Reception. Winning With Numbers provides access to a structured and systematic programme for number....it's like phonics for maths! The programme builds a strong foundation that children need to achieve higher standards in the wider mathematics curriculum. Winning With Numbers identifies 300 pieces of number knowledge and lines them up in a straight-line sequence of learning. The staff in EYFS then take every opportunity during the school day to explore this during the sessions where children are accessing the learning independently.
